Breeding

The circomstances in which I breed the birds.
I breed the birds in my garage, that I heath by the central heating of my house.
I keep the temperature in the wintertime at 19-20 degrees C. and the percantage of moistere in the air at  65-75 %.
I also regulate the length of the days.
The lights begin to burn at 9 in the morning till about half past ten in the evening.

In my garage I placed breeding compartments which I made myself.
I made them of white furniture paneling.
The size of the compartments are at least (L x B x H) 80 x 50 x 50 cm.
When I started breeding the agapornids, the size of the compartments were 60 cm lenght.
I discovered that this size in combination with the percantage of air moistere was the reasonthat the eggs didn't come out.
Then I widthened the compartments, and breeded my first young agapornids.

In my garage are 24 breeding compartments and tree bigger cages in wich I put the young birds for two weeks.
After two weeks I make the choise, which bird to keep for breeding of shows or which to sell.
In the small aviaries that have the size of 90 cmwidth, 2,40 meter hight and 1,50 meter deep.
I put the birds until they get their right colour.
In those month I com observe the birds at ease and try to find out their sex, most of the time I know, the way the parents are coloured, which sex the young birds will have.
This is because most colours are connected to the sex of the bird.

The nest compartments are horizontal and the measures are 38 cm lenght, 15 cm width and high.
They also have  two lids, so in summertime I can put one of the lids of, in orther to moisture in the nest compartment prevent this way of breeding.
I saw at various places.
I did make inquiries of the pras and cons and dicided to do it the same way.
I must say, after several years of breeding it does satisfy me.

These are my tree fly out cages were I put my young birds in.
Out of this cages I make the choise which bird is for breeding, seeling and for the shows.

The bestthing of this kind of agapornids is the variation of colours and the combination you can breed.

Now another year is over, and last year (2005) I breeded about 175 young birds.
For the coming season I have breeded enough young ones to make breeding couples.
I just have to make some more selections

24 December 2006

Because I have this year less breeding couples and the breeding of LB en half LB agapornids is also less succesfull, I expect to have about 125 young birds.
